From Reluctance to Belonging: How Kitty Found a New Home

When Kitty’s bungalow was scheduled for renovations, her family began the search for a temporary place where she could stay. Her son-in-law visited several homes, but as soon as he walked through the doors of this one, he had a feeling—it just felt right. Though the initial plan was short-term, he told Kitty that if she ended up liking it, she could choose to stay permanently. He was skeptical, though. “She won’t enjoy it,” he said. “She’ll stay in her room and won’t want to take part in anything.”

Kitty herself was hesitant. She made it clear she didn’t plan to join any activities and requested a room with a view, so she could look out at the gardens from the comfort of her chair. The staff adapted the room accordingly, respecting her wishes while hoping to gently encourage her.

But something surprising happened.

Within days of moving in, Kitty began venturing downstairs. Soon, she was painting poppies in one of the activity sessions, much to everyone’s amazement. The woman who had insisted she would keep to herself was not only participating—she was thriving.

Week by week, Kitty grew more involved and more at ease. Her laughter became a regular part of the home’s atmosphere. Then came the moment of decision.

After a visit to her nearly-renovated bungalow, Kitty quietly shared her thoughts: “It’s just too big. I’d be alone, and it would take me a week just to get to the kitchen.” Not long after, she made it official—she wanted to stay.

What was meant to be a temporary solution became a heartwarming new beginning. Kitty hadn’t just found a place to stay; she had found a home.
