Senior sleuths: Real-life spy catcher leads Derbyshire care home in Traitors-inspired game

At Coxbench Hall, a family-run care home near Derby, residents and staff have staged ‘The Coxbench Traitors’, a playful take on the popular TV format, complete with secret roles, challenges and tense ‘round table’ discussions, as they attempt to work out who among them can – and can’t – be trusted.

Presiding over proceedings is resident William Burton, who has taken on the role of “Game Master.” His authority is well earned: during his National Service during the Cold War, William was involved in uncovering German Stasi spies attempting to cross the border, a real-life chapter that has added an unexpected edge to the game.

Discussing how his past life has influenced the game, William said, “I spent my younger years searching for real spies, so I thought spotting a Coxbench ‘traitor’ would be an easy job. It’s been brilliant to see everyone joining in with the game and enjoying themselves.”

Claire Richardson, one of the home’s Directors, commented too, saying: “It’s been fantastic to see our residents and team throw themselves into the game, having a good laugh and occasionally accusing each other with perfect poker faces! We love watching our residents take the lead on activities and bring their own creativity to the table. Moments like this really show that getting older doesn’t necessarily mean slowing down.”

The content will be shared across Coxbench Hall’s social media platforms throughout February, following the broadcast of The Traitors’ fourth series. It aims to give families of residents and the wider community a glimpse into life and the creative enrichment enjoyed by the home.

While light-hearted in tone, the project poignantly celebrates the wit, confidence and mental agility of older people – challenging assumptions.

Now in its 42nd year, Coxbench Hall’s long-standing team nurtures strong bonds – a philosophy reflected in daily life and initiatives like this game.
